Pioneering Nanofluidics for New Chemistry, Biology, and Materials Science
Abstract:
Nanofluidics is the science and technology of fluids confined in nanometer-scale channels, where molecular transport, interactions, and reactions can differ fundamentally from those in bulk and microfluidic systems. The field is now evolving from a platform for observing nanoscale transport into a powerful tool for actively controlling molecules, reactions, and functions. To drive this transition, we have pioneered “Nano-in-Nano Integration,” which incorporates fluidic, electrical, optical, thermal, magnetic, chemical, and biological functionalities into nanofluidic systems. This approach enables precise studies and control at femtoliter, attoliter, single-nanoparticle, and single-molecule scales. In this seminar, I will highlight our recent advances in molecular and ionic transport, confined reactions, nanofluidic analysis, and single-molecule regulated chemistry (SMRC), illustrating how nanofluidics is evolving into a platform for pioneering new chemistry, biology, and materials science.

Yan Xu is currently a Professor at Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan, where he also serves as Head of the Nanofluidics Lab and Director of the Global Nanofluidics Innovation Hub (gNIH). He received his Bachelor's degree from Dalian University of Technology in 2001 and his Master's degree from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2004. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo in 2007. His research group focuses on the development and application of nanofluidic devices across a broad range of fields, including chemistry, biology, materials science, diagnostics, and medicine. The group is continually developing innovative nanofluidic methodologies for single-molecule regulated chemistry, single-cell omics, biomaterials, and nanomedicine, while also addressing global challenges in energy and the environment.
