Research is focused on the magnetic properties, with a particular emphasis on magnetization reversal processes and magnetoresitive responses, of low-dimensional artificial magnetic structures, such as ultrathin magnetic films and multilayers, magnetic nanostructures, magnetic nanoparticles and adsorbed molecules. We aim at a better understanding of fabrication processes and physical properties of new materials and functionalities as a first step towards the development of devices with custom-chosen properties.

Different experimental facilities, including growth (by molecular beam epitaxy MBE and sputtering in ultra-high vacuum environment as well chemical synthesis) with in-situ electronic, morphological and structural characterization, as well as ex-situ magnetic characterization techniques have been setting up at IMDEA. Additionally, large scale experimental facilities for basic and applied research in physics (i.e., synchrotron, neutron, as well as ion-accelerator sources) are normally used to prepare and to elucidate fundamental aspects of magnetic nanostructures with enormous impact for our society, including both spintronic, permanent magnets, and biomedical applications
